This is a curated list of Mastodon (and similar) instances in the Fediverse. It is not intended to be comprehensive and is meant to be a starting point for English-speaking beginners. For questions and/or comments, please see my contact page.

Racing - Mastodon Racing is a federate instance of the fediverse (OStatus & ActivityPub) mainly dedicated to Motorsports and Tech. Whether you are passionate or not about Motorsports, you will always be welcome on this forum, any type of subject is accepted (news, politics, fiction, science, culture, etc.). Moderation is done in English or French.

Scores - This instance is home to many sports related bots. While you can’t sign up for the instance itself, you are free to follow any and all of the bots you like to get updates on your favorite teams and their scores.

Ball Sports - Sportsball.Rocks is an unironic general sports Mastodon instance. Professional football (both), basketball, hockey, and baseball conversations are welcome as well as non-sports related talk. General politics should be avoided.

Science Fiction - The Wandering Shop is a Mastodon instance initially geared for the science fiction and fantasy community but open to anyone. We want our ‘local’ timeline to have the feel of a coffee shop at a good convention: tables full of friendly conversation on a wide variety of topics. We welcome everyone who wants to participate, so long as you’re willing to abide by our code of conduct. - Scifi.Fyi is a general-purpose mastodon instance that seeks to foster a welcoming and inclusive community! - a Star Wars themed Mastodon instance! The instance is not restricted to Star Wars related content: general use is welcome and expectedi.


Punk is a Mastodon hardcore punk community instance.

Metal - A Mastodon instance for Metal music fans. This Mastodon instance addresses Metal music fans, but can be used by other users as well.

Liner Notes - Liner Notes Club is a Mastodon instance dedicated to providing fans of recorded music with a place to socialize and share their musical musings.


Photography - A place for your photos and banter. Photog first is our motto

Art - Artists creating, illustrating, sketching, singing, musically inclined, photographing, sculpture, discussing & daily living too. — a place for your artwork of all types from visual, musical, peformance or ____. Also, fun banter, commentary & cited fair-use posts/art/reviews of others’ art too.

Writing, Poetry - Writing Exchange is a small, focused community for poets, bloggers, and every kind of writer. This is a place to share your stories and #smallstories, talk about writing, and get to know other writers here.

Board Games - Welcome to the first Mastodon Instance (that I know of) for board gamers! Join others in a free (libre!) and user supported social network for board gamers and the games they love.

Makers - Makers, Open Source Hardware (OSHW) and STEM/STEAM. Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) is a likely topic as well. If you’re interested in making things, allowing others to build on your work, and/or teaching others about making things, you might like this instance.



Journalists - is a global social network for news and journalism professionals.

Scientists - An instance for professional scientists, science communicators, and enthusiasts to interact and share science-related topics and rational thinking to the wider Fediverse.


The Netherlands - Mastodon instance for the Dutch community, but open to anyone. Primary languages Dutch and English.

Washington, DC, US - is a non-commercial social network. It is focused on Washington DC, but anyone can sign up. It’s part of a world-wide group of federated systems that offer Twitter®-like functionality with no central authority. Activity is moderated by other users, and there is no business entity monitoring users’ activity for potential gain.


Brisbane, Australia - This site is intended to be a pleasant space for folks to enjoy Mastodon. This instance is run out of Brisbane, Australia to allow faster access for locals.


Left of Center

Anarchists - Hispagatos is an Anarcho hacker collective that resolves around the Hacker ethics of Steven levy and Libertarian socialist ideas. We work hard to preserve decentralization,security and privacy in cyberspace and motivate towars an horizontal and non hierarchical mutialist society where technology is made by people for the people not by corporate masters to control people.

Progressivism - This is a small instance who welcomes new users. I support progressive politics, civic engagement, information sharing, economies of trade, mutual support, and challenging the patriarchy. 😉I like art, fiction, prose, non-fiction, journalism, and all kinds of writing. Support NaNoWriMo update blogging. Anyone want to write a bot that returns random writing prompts when you ask it politely?

Right of Center

Minarchist, Libertarian - This is, a place for thinkers of all varieties to discuss… well, pretty much anything they like. Perhaps especially “controversial” topics that might be risky to talk about in other places. Put bluntly, I’m a free speech absolutist – but not everyone else who I might federate with is, and thus cooperation places limitations. My intention is to give you as much freedom to discuss whatever you like as is possible.

Libertarian, Classical Liberas, and Guns - A Fediverse home to libertarians, classical liberals, right-of-center thinkers, gun owners, privacy and due process advocates, rugged individualists, and those believing that American Exceptionalism isn’t about a country or place but is rather an ideal.

Information Technology and Computer Science

Data Visualization - A social space for anyone in data, visualization, creative coding, and related arts and research. Share your work, discuss, critique, and ask for help! Come one, come all!

Systems Administration - A place for tech folks to discuss whatever interests them! Adheres to a code of conduct. Blocks instances with hate speech and/or illegal content. - The community of this instance focuses primarily on technology, especially IT, DevOps, and Programming. We mostly run a clean community, and do not allow NSFW content.

Linux - For Linux lovers, users, sysadmins; and the like. Welcome!

Open Source - Fosstodon is a Mastodon instance that is dedicated to Free & Open Source Software, or FOSS as many call it. Fosstodon is for people who are interested in open source technology and the awesome community around it. Whether that be Linux, open source software like Firefox, or Mastodon itself. If you’re interested in technology, Fosstodon is a great place to start. - This Mastodon instance is for people who care about, support, or build Free, Libre, and Open Source Software (FLOSS). Of course, discussions aren’t limited to just FLOSS – let’s share our unique interests!

Unix - is a *BSD-themed Mastodon Instance. General use is encouraged, and everyone is welcome as long as you follow our code of conduct.


Development - Discussions by game developers, or about game development. Art, Design, Technology, QA, Support etc.; all aspects of game development topics are welcome.

Game Making - Hi! I hope Game Making Social is a cosey, friendly place to talk and share stuff about amateur videogame making and everything surrounding that. It’s kinda an offshoot of Game Making Tools, which is a wiki(+) for a similar audience.


Pagan - Hello Traveler, and welcome to the Eldritch World Mastodon instance - we hope you find something of interest here. We’re a small Pagan site with an interest in coffee, beer, photography and software.

Witchcraft - Occult.Camp is an instance that is aethestically witchy. We will occasionally do #OccultTalk but it has very much just been a safe space with a witchcraft aesthetic. This is not a haven for free speech, and it is HEAVILY moderated.
